Happy National Day of Unplugging!!
Do you feel overwhelmed by ALL the latest, greatest, newest, coolest tech whether it’s an app, an online game, TikTok videos, YouTube how-to’s, or the constant pull into mindless social media scrolling or endless news coverage?
Do you feel you have an unhealthy attachment to being “in the know”? FOMO anyone? The struggle is real, and it doesn’t have to be or feel like this.
The problem is that we live in a 24/7 full access world that has led to a 24/7 addiction that is causing serious harm to our overall mental, physical, and emotional health.
Many of us are comparing our lives to the highlight reels of others which is giving a false sense of the larger picture. NO ONE has it all figured out and NO ONE is living in the land of rainbows and unicorns 100% of the time.
Did you know, based on a new study on Scotsman.com, it revealed that the average person spends around 8 ½ hours a day using the internet! That works out to 59 hours per week and a whopping 128 days a year! In other words, 1/3 of our life is spent online!
The consequences of staying on this path could lead to further, deeper, and long-term issues such as disease, mental illness, and staying stuck living a fear-driven life.
You don’t have to live like this anymore! It’s time to re-evaluate and reset your media habits (aka- your digital chaos!) by making intentional, deliberate, and energizing choices that put YOU in charge of your time, exposure, usage, and energy.

Awareness is the first step, and the good news is you CAN regain control of your digital choices so, you CAN embrace the balance between being informed yet, mindful of the 24/7 madness!
Here are some of my powerful ways to unplug and reset!
1. Set a timer and adjust the settings and notifications on ALL devices, apps, etc. Silence your distracting “dings”!
We live in an instant gratification society which means just because we CAN respond in the moment does not mean we HAVE to. Do you really need to hear a “ding” every time someone likes your cat video on Facebook? Every “ding” you get pulls you out of the present moment and into distraction.
2. Replace a current media habit with a healthier alternative
Are you someone who gets sucked into the 5:00, 5:30, and 6:00 pm news while making dinner that by the time ‘Wheel of Fortune’ rolls around you are feeling like breaking down or pulling your hair out? If so, maybe you could watch the 5:00 news and then turn the TV off. Then, crank up the volume and jam out to your favorite playlist while you dance around the kitchen preparing your meal. You are interrupting an old pattern and replacing it with one you intentionally choose.
3. Begin or bring back a TECH FREE hobby and create a FUN menu
When was the last time you played a board game or put together a physical puzzle with your family or even by yourself? Create a fun menu of all the things you enjoy doing that break free of the digital world and then schedule a regular time each week to choose an activity from your newly created FUN tech-free menu! A few ideas to get you started, get outside into nature, write on old school paper, read a physical book, take a yoga class, take up dance, karate, or painting class, run around the block…whatever makes your heart sing, add it to the list and do it!
Again, stay informed yet, be mindful of where you are spending your time and energy. I am not saying to stop watching the news or stop spending time on social media. After all, this is the world we live in. Rather, have the awareness to make new and empowering choices around what you are consuming and how often.
If you don’t choose, life will choose for you!
Once you decide to create a healthier relationship with your digital chaos, you will naturally begin to feel happier, healthier, and more in control over your media intake. You will begin to release some of the stress, overwhelm, and comparison which will give you some of your precious time and energy back!
What could be possible 6 months from now if you reset your digital habits? How would you feel physically, mentally, and emotionally with your newfound knowledge and boundaries in place?
It’s time to put YOU back in the driver’s seat and stop allowing hours of mindless scrolling or constant media intake to infiltrate your mind, body, and spirit!
Having the new awareness to make new choices that lead to new actions can take you from digital chaos to digital calm!
